I always felt the Williams fight was Ali at his best too. I was in the Army and truthfully at the time I wanted Ali to loose. All of us draftees felt his sudden stand on the draft for religious reasons came about mighty convienently for Ali. But that being said he was on top of his game, fast, accurate and Williams never had a chance. Some will say this was an old shell of a man he was fighting but Williams was still dangerous and was in great shape.
Jim and Jerry- I can't remember the exact quote as I don't have the book with me, but in Sting like a Bee, Jose Torres goes so far as to say that at that hour, at that moment "no Heavyweight, not Joe Louis, not anyone, was ever as good".
Well, truthfully on that night I couldn't see him losing against anyone either. Just seemed he had it all together and his speed was at another level, seemed Williams was stuck in mud, Ali was floating and his punches were so fast.
I'm sorry. I don't want to sound like sour grapes but I will say here what I have repeated for many years. Williams was a pro for about 10 or more years by the time he foguht Ali and it was a mirracle that he was able to fight at all as he was shot by a state trooper along a highway. The fact that he was able to come back after coming close to dying is astonishing. I think Ali looked his absoloute best against Zorra Folley. Folley fought well and landed some hard right hands on Ali before Ali turned up the heat and took him out.
